Help local communities everywhere protect their forests
VicForests is hard to beat because, unless your community already has long-established organisations prepared for a legal battle, you won’t even be allowed to have your day in court.
The challenge is to prove something called “standing”. We believe a group with members that each have a long and significant connection to a forest should be able to take legal action to protect it.
This has never been done in Victoria before and we’re excited to support setting a precedent that helps communities right across the state protect their forests.
It’s never been more important. Knowing that the days of plundering what’s left of Victoria’s native forests will be over in less than 10 years, the loggers are sending bulldozers into places they’ve never been before. Places like the Alberton West State Forest.
Fight for irreplaceable endangered species and the Strzelecki Koala
Just north of Wilson’s Prom in south Gippsland, it’s a precious, largely untouched island of biodiversity. Ecologists have found nine threatened, vulnerable, endangered and, yes, critically endangered plants and animals where government bureaucrats have selected for logging.
On top of that, there’s the precious Strzelecki Koala. Literally, the only original Victorian koalas left. Please help stop the logging of remaining habitat for the most important koala population in Australia.
Our Strezzie koalas are unique and genetically diverse survivors of the original wild population, there’s not much habitat left for them. Victoria’s lost many to fire already. Alberton West Forest is an important refuge and we need your help to protect it.
To make matters worse, the surveys were done during the cold months when creatures like the endangered tree goanna sleep in hollow logs and species like threatened orchids are impossible to identify.
Locals have won awards building wildlife corridors from the forest to the river and beyond but nothing anyone’s done over a decade can hold a candle to what VicForests is so keen to destroy.
All that’s needed is a stay of execution to allow proper surveying to be done.
How you can help
There’s a long and difficult legal battle ahead. Expert witnesses, court fees and other legal costs are expensive, to say the least!
Can you help fight for the forest and create legal history that will help communities protect precious places right across the state? Please donate whatever you can afford and join us.
